“Didn’t we pass that tree five minutes ago?”

“It’s a jungle, some trees look similar.”

“Nope. I’m preeeeeety sure we’re going around in a circle.”

Kate whirls around, her expression that of carefully reigned-in irritation.

“Again; why did you come?”

Shannon traces a rivulet of sweat as it coasts down Kate’s neck, slipping into her cleavage, before meeting her eyes with a smirk.

“Live together die alone, right?”

Kate rolls her eyes.

“I don‘t think that applies when you’re annoying me to death.”

Shaded by trees, the trail diverges into a vibrant netting of ferns, the closest branch bowing under the weight of a bundle of ripe bananas. Kate stoops down to retrieve a fallen fruit. She glances appraisingly at the other trees.

“Should be enough to last the camp a week, maybe more.” Kate turns to Shannon, tapping the banana against her shoulder and quirking her eyebrows. “Care to make yourself useful?”

But she blanches as Shannon leans toward her, her eyelashes fluttering like a butterfly in the breeze. Her eyes flash to her lips, then to her steady gaze, her breath caught in her throat.

“What’re you…”

Shannon grabs the banana from her hand, her bright grin shining triumphantly.

“Making myself useful.” She eyes the curved shape of the fruit, amused, before tucking it inside her pack.

“Too many dirty jokes.”

Kate laughs in spite of herself, hefting herself into the tree and pretending the flush in her cheeks is merely from the hike.
